Emerson went to the OR for a scheduled procedure this morning – replacement of her perf drain & placement of a (new) triple lumen central catheter. The procedure went well, but they were unable to extubate her post-op. This is new territory for us… Eme has never not extubated after a scheduled trip to the OR (with the obvious exception of transplant and other incidences where it was pre-planned otherwise). It was a surprise for sure. The PICU docs expected to pull the breathing tube shortly after she arrived on the floor, saying she simply needed a bit more time to “wake up”. It’s evening, though, & Emerson remains intubated… on NO sedation (no versed, no fentanyl – that’s never happened)… & not breathing over the vent, barely initiating any breaths at all on her own. She’s tired. They’re increasing her vent support now.
She continues to pee buckets & lose large amounts of electrolytes in the process. Again we chased potassium & magnesium replacements all day.
In a surprise turn of events, the bug she’s growing in her blood was identified today as a relatively susceptible organism… susceptible to everything she was on. She’s not improving though. It doesn’t make any sense to me at all. I highly suspect something else will turn up in the next several days – either a slow growing yeast in her blood or something with her bowel. Some here are pleased with the news of this susceptible bug. I, actually, am anything but as it leaves me pretty certain we’re missing something.
The only other explanation I can come up with is that Emerson is finally growing tired of the fight. I really don’t think that’s it, but if this bug is all they find there’s no other way to explain her reaction to it. She’s had bugs umpteen times worse than this & has not been this sick or required nearly this much medical support.
My greatest hope is we can stabilize Eme and transfer her to Denver to finish up treatment there. That’s what I’d like more than anything tonight… I want to take her home…
